I debated taking my extremely heavy medium format film camera on this Maui trip. Not exactly the best travel camera. But I wanted to see those colors on Fuji400h film. In the end I gave in. My back hated it but the colors were indeed beautiful. The following were all shot on a Pentax645N and processed by Indie Film Lab.
My wife and I flew into Kahului and drove down to Hotel Wailea. With Wailea as our home base, we explored the rest of the island. We drove the road to Hana, scaled Haleakalā National Park, and visited Lahaina and the west coast of Maui.
I’m so glad we stayed at Hotel Wailea. We had debated staying at a bigger resort closer to the beach. However, it’s only a five minute ride and very easy to get everywhere in town. It’s a gorgeous place with waterfall, stream, koi, and even a treehouse.
I’ll be honest, the black sand here was even more amazing than expected. Up against the blue of the water and the greenery, the contrast is striking.
